This is a cool little reissue of Acheron’s 1994 EP with a slightly different track listing. I’m only a little familiar with some of their later work, so it was nice to get this. It’s pretty short at just under 24 minutes and, to be honest, it’s a little uneventful, but I found myself liking it quite a bit. It’s mostly mid-paced death metal that’s quite heavy and a little atmospheric here and there, and some of the guitar work in the slower numbers flirts with plain heavy metal territory. Forget speedy, breakneck-speed death metal, this is the early stuff when a lot of the influences came from heavy and thrash and things were just slower. It’s nothing groundbreaking even for the time, but that dark and evil atmosphere and some catchy bits sure keep things interesting and call for repeat plays. |
