This Norwegian band has quite the membership, with current and ex-members of the likes of Cadaver, Satyricon and Mayhem, to name a few. With bands like this, sometimes you end up with something lacklustre, but that’s not the case here. The Gospel is old-school ‘90s black metal through and through, though rather than go too lo-fi or "underproduced", this here sounds quite modern with a punchy, rich production that spits everything out of the speakers. The raspy vocals are evil and nightmarish, to great effect. The guitars are incisive with a slicing sound that I can’t get enough of, and the drums are just pounding. There are some fast parts, but a lot of the album is slow to mid-paced, and the delivery is crushingly heavy. Wrap all this up in a dark, evil-as-fuck atmosphere and you’ve got a real winner here. |
