This is the second album for French band Deathbell, who are definitely in the school of Sabbathy, female-fronted occult Doom with bands like Jex Thoth—in fact Jex Thoth are the strongest influence I detect here. This is more groovy and trippy than crushing, with a lot of atmosphere and the mournful, soulful vocals of frontwoman Lauren Gaynor. The songs are long, and they create a great mood, though I do wish the guitar sound had a bit more bite and presence to it. I like the atonality of some of the riffing, which creates a more unfriendly sound and keeps this from being too typical. The guitar playing is really inventive in places, but I feel like the mix does not bring that out like it could have. If you want some moody Doom, then this is a band to watch for. |
