I can’t help but smile when I see how much Voïvod’s style has changed since I first heard War and Pain roughly 35 years ago. Of course, they have way more weird albums than ones with the raging thrash of their early albums, but still. Anyway, unsurprisingly Synchro Anarchy sees them playing that weird, somewhat unique sci-fi-ish sound that more often than not makes the listener wonder what the hell just ran them over. It’s once again a unique album, but the band is instantly recognizable even without Snake’s trademark vocal style. I’m really more into their early stuff and this style is really an acquired taste for me and I can’t say that I liked it much at first, but after several attentive (and not-so-attentive) listens, things started to take shape (and a weird shape it is). For fans of the 4th or 5th album on, this is likely an instant classic. For the others, you may have to give it some time.
