This EP is much quieter than the other studio albums from Varathron I own. This reissue includes three bonus tracks that bring it to album length. The backbone is Greek black metal as the distinct sound of that country’s dark arts is certainly audible throughout (mostly anyway). The album is quite melodic and, at least in black metal terms, I’d go as far as to say it’s relaxing. Not much evil here, it’s in fact kind of soothing. Even the vocals, despite the raspy screeches, are melodic despite the singing style and don’t convey the aggression you’ve come to expect. A lot of this stuff is actually quite catchy and with some staying power once the album is over. That certainly makes things a little interesting and the album is actually pretty good if you’re in the mood for this stuff, but as far as Varathron albums go, I’ve heard better. |
