Well, this is pretty bad. Astral Tomb are from Colorado, and they are definitely drinking from the well of US Death Metal that includes bands like Suffocation, Deicide, and Immolation, but they are not doing it that well. For one, the production is weak—not raw or interesting in any way, just muffled and flat, without much if any depth to the sound. They could overcome that if their riffs were class, but this band seems dedicated to either repetitive rhythm chunking or attempts at more technical passages that they can't seem to actually pull off. The songs here are all long—some of them are VERY long—and there is no compositional reason for them to be, as none of them have enough ideas for a 4-minute track, let alone 12, and no, I'm not kidding. The vocals are somehow the worst part of this, as it literally just sounds like wordless grunting—just identical, unintelligible grunts repeating through the songs with no care or feel for what else is going on. Pass. |
