We Are the Apocalypse is the seventh full-length album from Sweden's black metal stalwarts Dark Funeral, and my first time listening to them. I can't speak to their previous releases or consistency in terms of musical direction, but I can say that We Are the Apocalypse contains some solid melodic black metal that doesn't skimp on the blasting drums, icy sharp guitars and vocals that are harsh but almost entirely decipherable. There are no weak tracks and when the singer shouts the choruses on "Let the Devil in" or "Leviathan," he stamps them on your brain with the force of a hobnailed boot. The slower passages have a dark beauty that offsets the savagery and enhances the atmosphere Dark Funeral are cultivating. Musically, this album is straightforward, and I don't hear the band taking many risks, but it is well played, and the songwriting is above average, so that doesn't really matter. If you want to just plop the needle down on an album of melodic black metal and just revel in the evil, We Are the Apocalypse should do nicely. |
