The Exile is the third album from Canada's Mares of Thrace, whose music is doom with death vocals. This isn't Paradise Lost or My Dying Bride, though there are some melancholy and atmospheric bits on "Dark Harbours" and "Offerings of Hand and Tongue", most notably at the beginning of each. Most of The Exile is built on thunderous riffs and reverbed guitars with founding member Thérèse Lanz's bellowing above all. I like a lot of the songs on The Exile though nothing blows me away, but I find Lanz's vocals one-dimensional and unvarying (her clean singing on "Offerings of Hand and Tongue" is passable) and that gives the album a generic flow with one song having vocal lines similar to the next. The Exile is a decent album, and I can hear promise that some better singing and/or vocal lines could bring to the surface for Mares of Thrace. |
