The so-called Retro Doom movement has gone on for a long while now, so much so that I think we can officially stop calling it retro, but a lot of bands end up missing the mark because they only think about ripping off Black Sabbath or Electric Wizard without having good riffs or songwriting to back it up. Thankfully, Lucifer's Children have more to them than just a tube-amp sound and slow tempos and actually back it up with some pretty solid songs. A lot of this album is mid-paced, led by trudging, Iommi-inspired guitar work that's not always good enough to justify the lengthy tracks, but it at least has more to it than the lifeless fuzz a lot of bands end up churning out. There's one killer track on this album with "Goat of Mendes" while everything else is pretty good but not standout, and the longer songs like "My Bloodlust to the Moon" and album closer "The One Who Hears the Time's Voice" start overstaying their welcome by the time it's all said and done.

The biggest sticking point here is the vocals of Lidi Ramirez, which are akin to a heavily accented Doro doing an Ozzy impression. They're not always strictly on key, but they're generally suited to the music and help give this release a bit more identity than average. That said, this is still a fairly standard release that mostly stands out by being better made than average, so while it's worth a listen for fans of more old-school Doom, it's nothing you haven't heard before.
