Devourer have been consistently releasing strong albums worth of old-fashioned Swedish Black Metal since Across the Empty Plain, so it's not surprising that their latest album is basically more of that and then some. They still deliver an old-school Black Metal sound that's intense and malevolent while still incorporating a strong sense of atmosphere and melody as needed, but here they experiment more than usual with their songwriting and end up sounding more individual than before. The songs are split pretty evenly between more straightforward and aggressive numbers like "Bearer of Dark Tidings" and "Visions of Megiddo" and more progressive and ambitious tracks like "Terminus," "Existential Abhorrence," the doomy "Malformed," and the nightmarish highlight "The Arbiter of Nullification," the latter of which really sees them stepping far outside their comfort zone. This all makes for an album that is varied and often exciting as it pushes the boundaries of what the band can do while still sticking to their established sound. Fans of the band can get this sight unseen, and anyone who loves '90s Swedish Black Metal that goes for more than mere worship will want to give Devourer their attention from here on out.
