Powergame is a German band, so you know their third album, Slaying Gods, is going to be chock full of crunchy guitars and power metal-esque choruses. The whole album adheres to this formula with songs like "Chasing the Lion" and the title track featuring some of the more memorable moments. The singer has a unique voice with a varied approach and some of the songwriting combines a neoclassical approach mixed with some creepy keyboards and unusual lyrics, so King Diamond is a band that came to mind more than once while I was listening to Slaying Gods. The singer struggles to avoid going flat at times, not terribly so but noticeable. The weirdness combined with the traditional, direct heavy metal gets the epic treatment on the closer, "The Chalice," which has hints of Manilla Road. I like Slaying Gods, one, because it is rather entertaining and two, Powergame don't really sound like a lot of other bands. It isn't a perfect album and there are things the band could clean up, but it is different enough and solid enough to be worth checking out if crunchy, German melodic heavy metal is your thing.
