This is an interesting album by a Death Metal band who are trying to add new sounds to their music without becoming something else. The base of this is very much that riffy, barbaric style of South American Death, with crunching heaviness and guttural roaring vocals, but the compositions are really something else. These are all long songs—some of them over ten minutes—and they cram in a lot of different parts to keep things interesting, all without being technical at all. There are adventurous sounds and flourishes here, incorporating both Trad Metal and Prog Metal influences, even some stuff that reminds me of more spacy elements. The thing that keeps it solid is that it's all subordinate to the Death Metal base, and so this remains heavy and aggressive, even as it is bucking the standard form. Definitely a band worth hearing if you like bands like Mithras or The Chasm. |
