This is a band made up of mostly current and former members of Suidakra (yes, including Arkadius) plus the vocalist from Graveworm, and it sounds like it. This is Melodic Death Metal that sounds nothing like the tired Gothenburg clichés, and instead uses the bright, sharp formula that Suidakra has used so well for so long. Given that Suidakra has become more and more mired in atmospheric and ambient sounds over the years, this is a welcome return. The overall songwriting on this is not breaking the mold, but the standard Death Metal sounds are broken up by sharp, lively melodic riffs and passages that really serve to remind me of why this kind of music was so refreshing in the first place. The vocals are a standard growl that gets the job done and that's about it, but the music carries this album past small complaints, as every time you think it is getting dull it busts out something new and gets your attention again. Strong playing and strong melodies make this worth hearing. Arkadius has not left all his pretension behind, and you do get some unneeded narration and such, but overall this is much more direct and enjoyable than Suidakra's recent works. As a side note, I have seen several places online (including Metal-Archivesw) list the album title as "Necrohedon" when the actual cover clearly says Necrohedron. A small, careless mistake, but it seems to be propagating. |
