Friends of Hell is a new band that plays old school, '80s doom on their self-titled debut album. There is a Candlemass foundation featuring a leaden rhythm section and a NWOBHM approach to the tempos, which vary from traditionally slow to occasionally mid-paced. The singer (Albert Witchfinder, ex-Reverend Bizarre) has a clear, from the diaphragm style of projection but can also change his delivery if the atmosphere of the song demands it, like on "Into My Coffin," where he channels a bit of King Diamond. This song is already creepy, and his singing makes it all the more unsettling. Other than the moments like this, the songwriting and performances are standard, and the album doesn't have a lot of highlights though it gives the overall atmosphere you expect from a doom record. Check it out if you're looking for some Candlemass but with a creepier, Mercyful Fate vibe. |
