The Offering is the fifth album from Wisconsin's Lords of the Trident. I liked their Shadows From the Past album, and I would say I'm equally happy with The Offering. These guys play an epic style of heavy metal that draws on early Manowar and Virgin Steele in terms of clear, booming vocals and pounding bottom end that really push songs like "Legend" and "Acolyte" forward with authority. There is an upbeat tone and almost progressive vibe (think Threshold) on "Feed the Wolves" and "Carry the Weight" which are good songs, but it is a noticeable, though not unpleasant, shift in the flow of The Offering. They are right back at the epic stuff to round out the album and they ramp up some flashy neoclassical guitar work on cuts like "These Tower Walls." Lords of the Trident are not reinventing the wheel, just delivering a thick, consistently fist-pumping slab of heavy metal straight to your eardrums. |
