This is (I think) album number four for this bizarre band from Timesoara, Transylvania, and it is really no shock that a band from the homeland of Vlad the Impaler would be grim and bizarre. I have no idea what their name means, or the album title, and I think the lyrics are in Romanian as well – though since this is a BM band, I can't make them out anyway. But for all that, this is still a pretty good CD. Negura Bunget (I know it's Romanian and all, but it sounds retarded) play atmospheric, moody Black Metal with lots of keyboards and long instrumental passages. This is in no way 'grim' or 'necro' – it's more like Thy Serpent than Mayhem, with some bits that remind me of Enslaved. One point of interest is that there are no song titles on this disc, just numbers., which is so kvlt it borders on pompous. With a 50+ minute album and only four tracks, you can imagine that these are veeeerrrrrrryyyy long songs. There are a lot of long, rolling melodic guitar parts with atmospheric keys, then they'll break for a drawn-out mood part or some clean vocals here or there. The songs here have no real structure, and nothing at all resembling a verse or a chorus. Vocals are mixed very low al la Summoning, and there are long stretches with none at all. So I'm not sure what to make of this. On the one hand it is different and generally enjoyable – though it does go on too long towards the end. On the other hand it has nothing memorable about it, and is neither melodic enough to be catchy nor brutal enough to be cathartic. If I had to pick a word to describe this album, it would be ostentatious, as in 'look how cool and different we are'. I can't say I love this album, because I really don't. But I do like it, and Negura Bunget at least get points for being original. |
