There's a lot of black metal coming my way but it's surprisingly rare that I get something as raw and basic as this. Even more rare is that the band hails from Indonesia, which has been producing a lot of brutal death metal acts and little else in the past few years. Think of the mid-90s stuff like that released by Les Légions Noires and many other bands that either got laughed at or hailed as geniuses. Throw in some early Burzum here and there. Archaic Moon Mysticism has that DIY recording sound that sounds like it was recorded in less-than-optimal conditions. That doesn't work for some, but here it adds quite a bit to an overall hateful, depressing and chaotic atmosphere—the kind of stuff that'll mess up with your mind. The sound is kind of thin and a little low, and couple that with the music just chugging alone without much that really stands out. If this were anything else, I'd think of it as bad, but here that's just part of the overall fucked up atmosphere. More notable are the out-of-this-world screeches that are completely undecipherable and, unlike the music, blast out of the speakers and that tortured sound is definitely haunting. Nothing pretty here, none at all. If you like any kind of finesse in your black metal, you definitely won't find it here. This is about as raw as it gets these days. |
