Mercurion is the third album from Sweden’s Armory, a band I’d not heard prior. They play raw, speedy heavy metal that puts more stock into trying to knock your socks off than a pristine performance, which is fine, especially if you are a fan of the ‘80s. There is nothing here that hasn’t been done before and, in some spots early on, the singer can drift out of key though he gets it under control as the album progresses. The songwriting is generic, and I can’t remember much about Mercurion after it is over other that it manages to rock pretty hard. It reminds me of some of the old Euro metal bands that were around at the same time as the NWOBHM was happening like Axewitch and Crossfire, though with less individuality. Armory aren’t bad, but they are not much more than another face in a wide sea of traditional heavy metal. |
