If Metal Archives is to be believed (and the band’s website has apparently been replaced with their Facebook page, which doesn’t have much history), calling this 2022 compilation "40 Years of Ear Danger" might be a stretch since they appear to have been active from 1981 to 1984 then not again until 2007, so perhaps "20 Years of Ear Danger" would be more accurate. Math notwithstanding, this band from The Netherlands has rerecorded their second demo from 1983 and combined those songs with their 2018 EP Storming the Gates and released it as Still Going Strong – 40 Years of Ear Danger. I’d never heard of them prior to receiving this demo, but with a name that doesn’t scream the heaviest of heavy metal, I was expecting a release with more than a little hard rock and that’s pretty much what Ear Danger deliver. This is no hair metal band, they are more aligned with the early NWOBHM and bands like Gaskin, Battleaxe and Tank. Every song is four minutes of bashing hard rock/heavy metal that sounds like something you’d hear from the really great bar band that’s been playing every Friday at the local pub for years and has their shit together, but doesn’t have the songwriting chops to write anything you’ll be singing all the way home. It’s well played but ultimately generic with very little in the way of any individuality that would make you say, "oh, that’s Ear Danger." I don’t hate it when it is on, but I can’t think of a reason to recommend seeking it out. |
