My tour through the early discography of the NWoBHM band Tank, courtesy of the series of reissues from High Roller, continues with their second full-length album (and third reissue when you include the EP Don’t Walk Away), Power of the Hunter. It is apparent with this release that Tank is not what I thought they were, and their music is on the hard rock end of the metal spectrum. Sure, tracks like "Red Skull Rock" and "Biting and Scratching" have that early ‘80s, DIY, rough and tumble sound that a lot of early bands from the UK had and you can pick out similarities to bands like Gaskin, Battleaxe and Quartz. But Tank weren’t afraid to take chances, which you can hear on their cover of The Osmonds’ (The OSMONDS!!!) "Crazy Horses," which they turn into a Motörhead song with a mean bass line and gravelly vocals. You also have "Some Came Running" which has a southern boogie sound that would fit right in on a Molly Hatchet album. So yeah, some hard rock happening here alongside the NWoBHM stuff. Overall, I would say Power of the Hunter is very similar to its predecessor, Filth Hounds of Hades, just less memorable. Another reissue for the Tank and/or NWoBHM completist.
