You would swear a band with a name this obvious would have been around forever, but in truth this particular Obscene has only existed since 2017, and this is only their second disc of crunching, Euro-styled Death Metal. The band is from Indianapolis, but their style is rooted in ‘90s-era Scandinavian Death like Pestilence, Demigod, and most particularly Asphyx, especially considering vocalist Kyle Shaw’s higher-pitched vocal delivery, which has certain similarities to Martin Van Drunen in the old days. This is aggressive and has a lot of enjoyable heaviness, but it just does not do anything to really rise above the crowd. Fully competent but not really necessary. |
