I Am the Night is a band formed in 2020 by a bunch of well-traveled Finnish musicians including Paradise Lost’s Waltteri Väyrynen and Omnium Gatherum’s Markus Vanhala. On their debut album, While the Gods Are Sleeping, they lay down some excellent early ‘90s black metal. Not the uber raw stuff, but the kind that combined blasting drums and tortured vocals with keyboards for a melodic and epic sound. If you’ve heard Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk or Storm of the Light’s Bane, you will know all you need to know about what While the Gods Are Sleeping has to offer. It is not a new or inventive sound, but I Am the Night are exactly faithful to the aesthetic laid down by early Emperor and Dissection, so if early ‘90s black metal is your thing, you won’t want to miss it. |
