If you are into Jo Capitalicide’s Ice War, you certainly don’t need to wait around very long for new music. Beyond the Void is the band’s sixth full-length album since 2017 on top of a host of singles and EPs (to say nothing of his myriad other bands). I’ve never been a huge fan of the band, but I think in terms of music, Beyond the Void has some pretty good songwriting that evokes early Iron Maiden, circa the debut and Killers. Songs like "No Future" and "Murderer" have that punk-infused energy brought into focus with some solid riffing and melodic lead work. The downside for me, as always, is Capitalicide’s singing, which is bad. I don’t get the impression he’s a great singer to start with, and the shouts and melodic lines he’s written for Beyond the Void are beyond his abilities in a lot of places (at least it sounds that way). That said, if you like Ice War and the vocals, I don’t see how Beyond the Void won’t do it for you as it is one of the band’s better efforts. |
