Damn. I don’t hear black metal this raw, haunting and demented all that often despite the number of albums that come across my speakers. I was sure this was some reissue of a Norwegian album from the early to mid-90s, but no, Vanagandr is a Chilean duo and this was first released in 2021. The music is chaotic and raw as fuck, but surprisingly a little catchy here and there. The vocals are the most notable thing; loud, high-pitched, haunting and demented screams that are completely undecipherable and ear-piercing. This is the kind of music that reminds me of the ultra raw stuff from very early Burzum and other bands of the same ilk. The atmosphere is both depressing and brutal as fuck, a strange but very effective combination. Very basic, absolutely not pretty and full of sheer hatred, the kind of stuff that will give the uninitiated nightmares for days to come. Here’s hoping these guys don’t calm down and keep delivering goodies like Lycanthropic Black Metal. |
