This is very raw black metal with nightmare-inducing, tortured vocals that mix horror and despair. While there’s a lot going on, overall the album is kind of monotone, chugging along musically while the vocals break the monotony here and there. That may sound like a bad thing, but it’s the kind of music that really fits the mood on a grey, rainy day. Listening to the album over time, I had mixed reactions going from "this rules" to "this sucks" depending on the mood of the day, so it’s certainly peculiar. Overall this is pretty chaotic and messy stuff, but there’s surprisingly quite a bit of melody throughout, a contrast with the more-than-basic, straightforward black metal at play here. A weird album, in a good way. |
