The U.K.’s heavy/power/folk metal bards Dark Forest have used the down time due to Covid to give us the EP Ridge & Furrow. As pandemic projects go, Ridge & Furrow is on the upbeat side, but this is Dark Forest, so songs that evoke the fantastic mysteries of the natural world and all its wonders are to be expected. Like previous works (Beyond the Veil, Oak, Ash & Thorn), the songs on Ridge & Furrow are based on the traditional metal pioneered by Iron Maiden, and the band leans into making the vocal lines and melodies supremely catchy. It is generally mid-paced with little of the speed its predecessors flashed (except the rerecording of "Under the Greenwood Tree" from their second album Dawn of Infinity), but I think that works to singer Josh Winnard’s strengths. He still doesn’t have a booming voice, but he sounds more comfortable with what the band has come up with and at no time does he sound overmatched. There’s nothing on Ridge & Furrow you haven’t heard Dark Forest do before, but they do what they do so well, if you are already a fan you probably won’t care.
