Härdrocker plays a style of black/thrash/speed metal on their album Rider of the Night that skews to the grimier, punk-influenced end of the spectrum. The vocals are mostly low growls, but the occasional ear-piercing scream breaks them up nicely. There are a lot of effects on the singer’s low croaks, which could be intentional for atmosphere or to cover some shortcomings, probably both, but it sounds cool regardless. The production is overdriven and sounds like the redline on the recording deck was no stranger to Härdrocker as they laid down tracks like "Speed Motorized Rock N Roll" and "Outlaw". There are some noticeable Motörhead influences in their sound, specifically the prominent bass, which is played Lemmy style, like a rhythm guitar in spots, and the leads which have both the sound and style of Fast Eddie Clarke. The singing and the lyrics are closer to Venom when they were at their less satanic and the whole package reeks of thrashy punk goodness. Härdrocker break no new ground but they play with high energy and wild abandon, so if black/thrash/speed is your thing, this one will surely wind you up. |
