At this point Amon Amarth are pretty much just cranking out albums so they have an excuse to tour, and it shows, as they have not really produced a great album since With Oden on Our Side in 2006. I thought Jomsviking was weak, and while Berserker was a step up, it still does not really break the mold. Overall, I think the songwriting is better on The Great Heathen Army than it has been for quite a while, but it's still not their A-game. The production is a bit better, as it has more oomph in the bottom end, and doesn't sound so light, but the guitar sound still lacks bite, so even heavier tunes like the title track and "Oden Owns You All" don't hit like they could if the guitars sounded good. Opener "Get in the Ring" is probably the best tune here, as it actually reminds me of the old days like on Avenger. I want to like this better than I do, but it really seems like Amon Amarth have just slid into a late-career rut. This is good enough while it is on, but it's just more of the same.
