Skulls of My Enemy is the fourth album from Resistance, a band out of California that has a prototypical US metal sound, balancing speed and aggression with melody and catchiness. The guitars are crisp, the drums and bass are thunderous and the vocals a pitch-perfect shout with just the right combo of grit and polish. If you want to throw a fist in the air, check out barnburners like "Metallium," "Valhalla Has Locked Its Doors" or "Earthshaker." Listening to these songs is the musical equivalent of riding with Max Rockatansky down some forgotten outback highway in the last of the V-8 Interceptors. If you want a little more melody, queue up "Nordic Witch" and "Awaken the Necromancer." These songs are still heavy but are content to move along in a smoother fashion. The songwriting is uniformly solid with some of the aforementioned songs really standing out as worthy of hitting repeat. Fans of US bands like Ravage, Widow, Reverend and even early Queensrÿche should find plenty to like on Skulls of My Enemy. |
