I expected this to be some kind of Manowar-esque True Metal, but instead this is a very stripped-down Death/Thrash band, who are definitely trying to hark back to the more primitive era when we didn't have so many genre subdivisions. The thing with this kind of metal is there are no gimmicks, you just have to crank out killer riffs, and Barbarian are pretty good, but not amazing. This has energy, but the songwriting is standard and the production is raw without being raw enough to be really fun. This in the same vein as bands like Athor or Twilight Hammer but not as good. |
