Well this is a feral, frigid good time. Nocturnal Sorcery are a band who seem intentionally obscure (not even a Facebook page) and who obviously bow down to the second-wave greats of ages past. This actually reminds me a good bit of Nehemah, with the layered melodic but atonal riffs and the rasping shriek vocals. Classic Satyricon would be another touchstone here. The songwriting is propulsive and aggressive, yet with a lot of depth and little flourishes and twists to keep it interesting. The songs do sometimes go on longer than they need to, and yet the cold, malevolent atmosphere and saw-edged guitar sound remain compelling. |
