Beware of the Night is the debut full-length album from Spain's Invaders and if the spiky, neon-hued hair on the cover image wasn't enough of a clue, it is full of '80s-inspired heavy metal. It is the smooth, catchy yet still heavy sort of metal that was coming out of the West Coast scene before the media and music industry started to glam it all up. Clear vocals ride over guitar-centric melodies and are punctuated by some excellent, not overly technical, lead work. It's the kind of music that enough power to get your foot tapping and air guitar tuned up but won't peel the paint off the walls. It's a generally catchy album and quite consistently good with no songs leaping out of the speakers but no duds, either. Into the Fire by Dokken (the title track of which Invaders cover on the digital version of Beware of the Night) is the band/album that I was most often reminded of, but early W.A.S.P., Keel and bands like that are all woven into Invaders musical DNA. If you want a slice of unpretentious yet enjoyably accessible heavy metal, this is an album to queue up. |
