I've been buying books written by Dayal Patterson ever since I came across Black Metal: Evolution of the Cult in 2018. The guy is a great writer and knows his stuff. The Mega Zine is something different: It is basically a fanzine in book form. The layout resembles a lot of fanzines and really has that feel. At first I thought that he used to have a fanzine and this was just a compilation; that's how much the layout threw me off. So, fanzine lovers like me will get a kick out of this. The book is filled with in-depth interviews with many bands, known and not so known, as well as some labels owners, illustrators and photographers. You won't find any 1-2 page interview like in some printed magazine here: All of them are several pages long, so get that beer ready before starting on one. There are some bands in there I'm not particularly interested in, but the quality of the questions (and answers) is such that I didn't skip anything. Bands like Reverend Bizarre, Bal-Sagoth, Ancient, Scythian, In the Woods are in there, among others and also Head Not Found label owner Metalion. No big names here, all underground stuff and unless you're a walking encyclopedia, you're bound to learn something here and possibly discover a few interesting bands. |
