This is some kind of messy black metal from this band that has been around since 2013 and is now releasing its first full-length album. In terms of "pure" black metal, what you'll find here is closer to the first wave; raw and dirty and sometimes catchy, sometimes sounding like it could fit on a horror movie soundtrack. The band also flirts with black 'n' roll quite a bit, and I dare you not to headbang or at least get the foot tapping when those songs come up. I'm also reminded of early-to-mid '80s German thrash at times, very raw and fast, basic stuff that you can't get enough of. I Am the Skel Messiah is all over the place and takes you on a rollercoaster of extreme genres without getting too extreme, which may make it more appealing to those who can't stand it when things go a little overboard. With all this, the album is fun but kind of directionless. After enough listens you kind of get used to it and enjoy the diversity. |
