Hammerheart Records is releasing remastered versions of Therion's middle-period albums, skipping over the lame discs like Lucid Dreaming and The Crowning of Atlantis—which are really glorified EPs with studio outtakes and questionable cover songs. Anyway, this is the 1998 opus Vovin, which finds the band sounding much more put-together than on the rather scattered Theli.

This one has a much more unified sound primarily because they use the choral vocals the entire time, switching back and forth between female and male choirs and mixing them up. It not only keeps the songs sounding consistent, but it also gives this a sound like no other band, and this is really where Therion's identity in this period came together. The songs are definitely metal, with real metal riffs used alongside the keys and other backing instruments, but they don't go overboard with those, and a lot of this is just heavy riffs with choral singing, and it really feels like the band finally hit what they were aiming at.
