It took me a few listens to Infidel Rising's A Complex Divinity before it dawned on me which band their blend of prog and power reminded me of. Their combo of double-kick anthems ("All the Fear") and introspective ballads ("Our Lost Poetry") delivered with high, clear singing and keyboards intertwining with guitars in a complex yet catchy blend sounds a lot like Italy's Labyrinth. Infidel Rising's sound is so Italian, I was a little surprised to learn they hail from Dallas, Texas. Regardless, they play this style well and A Complex Divinity is pleasing to the ear at all times (except maybe when the vocals get a tad squirrely in the first verse of "Silence of the Night"). Songwriting is Infidel Rising's Achilles Heel. Their songs are good but generic and while there is nothing at all bad about them, none really shines. If power/prog is your thing, you might not be blown away by what Infidel Rising is doing but you can certainly do a lot worse than A Complex Divinity. |
