Greece's Medieval Demon has been around since the early '90s with a 15-year break between 1998 and 2013. Black Coven is their fourth album and third since reforming. With Greek black metal you can expect a lot of melody and that is the case with Black Coven. The guitars have a warmer sound than you typically get in black metal and the band isn't afraid to incorporate doom tempos and even traditional metal riffing into their songs. Neither of these things reduces the cold, creepy atmosphere Medieval Demon has created, and that is due in part to the addition of things like "angelic" choirs singing in minor keys, haunting keys playing music that sounds like a deranged carnival organ and even the saxophone. Normally, I dislike the saxophone in almost any setting, but here on songs like "Black Coven" and "Baptismal Blood" it ramps up the unsettling vibe to a whole new level. At their core, Medieval Demon play solid second wave black metal with plenty of raspy growls, shouts, gurgles, etc. and blasting drums, but on Black Coven, they've added a lot of elements that take it to the next level of cold, chilling black metal music. |
