Wolfcross are a Black Metal act from Sweden, and that should already tell you everything you need to know about this release. Most of this album blasts away like Marduk when they bother to have actual riffs, and this starts off pretty strong with the hooky "So I Return" and the menacing "Old Sinner." Sadly, these boys run out of steam pretty quickly and get much more generic from there, with the few places where they try to expand their sound not really panning out. "Svart Speed Metal" tries to act like a Venom song and just doesn't have the energy for it, and the one-two punch of "Heathen Heart" and "From the North" shows them doing their best to sound like mid-period Bathory, which they kind of manage with the latter track, but the former doesn't really have the riffs for it and drags on. As an official debut, this shows some promise, but they have a ways to go if they want to stay above the sea of bands that fail to live up to their promise. |
