Pact have been cranking dark, grim Black Metal since they formed back in 2006 as Aiwass and have been releasing albums every 2-4 years like clockwork since, so it's no wonder that we got their latest album, God Only Knows, earlier in April of this year. Never being a band for innovation, Pact still play their Black Metal like it's the late '90s with ravenous speed and ferocity that still manages to evoke a grim, chilling atmosphere, especially when they slow down and get more moody and melancholic on "Mortal." There's not much more to say other than how professional the band has gotten at this one particular thing, now reminding me a good bit of Watain in spots with how tight and intense they are. I don't think we'll ever get a masterwork from them, but God only knows how many more bands in the style there are that aren't a tenth as entertaining as Pact, so as long as they crank out albums like this, I'll happily piss on a cross as I headband along. |
