I hadn't heard of Defleshed in many years, not surprising considering they split up shortly after releasing Reclaim the Beat in 2005. They got back together in 2021 and Grind Over Matter is their new offering. Having recently revisited some of their older albums, I must say this long break did them some good. Grind Over Matter is wall-to-wall thrashing death insanity with vicious raspy vocals (relatively decipherable) and it's nonstop from beginning to end. In the past I often found the band's sound on disc to be a little thin or can-like, but there's none of that here. The album is heavy with a full, crushing sound that pins you to the ground and leaves you just enough of a breather for you to headbang. Defleshed returned at a time where the genre is a hell of a lot more crowded than when they split up, but Grind Over Matter proves that they still have what it takes to stand up and get noticed. |
