Ceremonial Worship surprisingly hail from Greece. I say, "surprisingly," because there's kind of a typical Greek black metal sound that always makes you go, "this is from Greece," but this is not one of them. This is very raw and basic, barebones black metal largely devoid of any kind of melody, with a repetitive pattern that just chugs along, and it's surprisingly effective in its monotony, for lack of a better word. Go back to some barebones black metal of the mid-90s and you have an idea of the kind of rawness on display here. Not every band gets this right, but Ceremonial Worship manages to project a dark, gloomy, malevolent atmosphere on this one. If you don't require your black metal to be complex or even remotely fancy and enjoy the occasional voyage into minimalistic black metal, this might just hit the spot for you. |
