Three of the musicians from Crypt Sermon are letting loose their unholy black/thrash impulses via Through Sheer Will and Black Magic, the debut full-length album from their band Daeva. I assumed this was a European act until I looked on Metal-Archives as their sound is very much in that mold and done very well. The basic formula is thrash played at top speed with riffing that probably had the strings on the guitars smoking and a blur of double kicks. The vocals are raspy with a few shreds of humanity remaining, so Through Sheer Will and Black Magic conjures a mix of early extreme bands like Venom, Bathory and Possessed with the beginnings of the second wave of black metal and Mayhem. They've dialed in the cold, unsettling atmosphere without sacrificing the visceral punch of thrash and have a knack for using slower, creepy passages, like on "Passion Under the Hammer," to give the album some ebb and flow. It is an arresting listen, one that is not like much of the black/thrash out there now that is starting to get generic. Grab a copy if some evil, thrashy metal is what you need (but you may want to leave the lights on).
