Fallen Kingdom is the second album from this band out of Germany going by the name Unchained Horizon. They play traditional heavy metal heavily influenced by early Iron Maiden, specifically the first three albums (Iron Maiden, Killers, and The Number of the Beast). Maiden fans are sure to pick up on these influences after a couple of passes through Fallen Kingdom. "Beneath the Ice" features some Dickinsonian "whoa-oh-oh-oh" singing like at the end of "Hallowed Be Thy Name," though the singer is no Bruce, but to be fair, who is? The guitar work on "Stranger" is similar to some of the traded harmonies from the first Maiden album and "The Marksman" features a tone quite like "Remember Tomorrow." The bass gallops in lots of places, though maybe not as forward in the mix as Steve Harris but it is definitely there. Songs like "Bridge to Nowhere" even follow a similar songwriting template as "Children of the Damned." Now, loads of bands can trace much of their sound back to Iron Maiden, so no flies on Unchained Horizon for that (cripes, even their name sounds like it could have been a Di'anno-era song title), but few are as "dedicated," shall we say, as these guys. At least they sound good doing it. I really enjoyed Fallen Kingdom each time I listened and I'm admittedly a fan of the first three Maiden records over much of their later stuff, so that tracks. I wouldn't say they are imitating the British legends, perhaps that they simply are very much of the Iron Maiden School of metal. Fallen Kingdom is a solid release on its own, but if you love early Maiden, it might be next level for you.
