Technical Death Metal seems to run in two different breeds: diddle-deedle jazz bullshit on one hand, or tight, savage, intricate killing on the other. This is option two, thankfully, and so despite my wariness of this kind of thing, I am very pleasantly surprised. This is the second album for French band Catalyst, and I am going to have to hunt down their debut if it is anything like this one. This is a highly technical band that remembered they are supposed to be Death Metal, and so despite the extremely proficient display of precision musicianship, they remembered to stay heavy and aggressive as fuck. They do employ some clean vocals on this, and I have to say they don't work well, making this sound too trendy and accessible. I like this best when it is blazing along at hurricane speeds bellowing about destruction and hate. |
