Norrsköld have quietly gone around being one of the coolest Black/Death bands working in the Swedish scene for years now, with their last album being the killer Withering Virtue - The Second Chapter back in 2017. There have been some notable lineup changes since then, namely with vocalist Lisa Hultgren being replaced by Adam Rexius, old drummer Robert Isojärvi returning, and Johan Tunander returning to his duties as a bassist as a result. Understandably, this has led to a slight change in direction on Prisma Aeturnus, with the band leaning more into the Melodic Death Metal aspect of their sound and coming up with sharper, more striking melodies and hooks than before, sounding closer to Swedish luminaries like In Flames and Excretion than Dissection in the process. That's not to say this is a lesser work, as this is as strong as their older material in a slightly different way, all complemented by the excellent blackened shrieks of Adam, who proves to be a real asset to the band on this album. Anyone looking for more folk-tinged Dissection worship might be left cold, but songs like "Beyond the Night" and "Witness the Illusion" contain all the style and power the band has always been known for while introducing more grace and finesse than in the past. A welcome return from an underappreciated band. |
