Hallux plays energetic death/thrash with a good sense of melody and with plenty of heaviness amplified by a production that's a little muddy and could benefit from toning it down a little as what the songs gain in heaviness, they lose in clarity and things get meshed too much together at times. It takes a little bit of effort to look past that I dig out what's underneath. I liked the album more on the first few listens; after a while the annoying little details became more apparent. Still, it's a fun album if you just go along for the ride. The vocals are pretty damn good, almost making you want to sing along despite the harsh style and making the songs a little crispier than they would otherwise be. This material has got to kill in the live setting, where it's sure to get the mosh pit going. Not great, but quite listenable. |
