Arkham Witch are a band I've followed for a while, starting with their Lamp of Thoth cover EPs and finding their bare bones old-school approach entertaining enough to keep up with them. Swords Against Death is their fourth and latest album, and it's more of what you would expect from this band: simple, catchy old-school worship that's as much about the '70s as it is the '80s. They've never been a very flashy or original band, but sometimes simple is best, and Arkham Witch have their formula down to a science at this point with grooving, Iommi-esque riffs and a carefree attitude that borders on punk at times, and that keeps them interesting and exciting despite how familiar everything they do is. This album is a bit more epic than before, though, and they even inject some Thrash sensibilities on songs like the title track and "Reap Your Soul", the latter of which has the heaviest riffs on the album. Outside of that, Arkham Witch remains a reliable act completely uninterested in evolution or change and are instead dedicated to being vintage and fun above all else. Recommended.
