I'm literally writing this review just hours before seeing this band play at a nearby venue (assuming I don't get stuck in the snow on the way there; this snowstorm started more than 14 hours ago). I first saw Exotoxic some four years ago (unfortunately having had too many beers to remember their set) and then again this past June opening for Introtyl. Face the Facts is about as demo as it gets. It's been rereleased a couple of times, but I don't think it was polished in any way. The sound quality is dubious, the demo is short; basically this is the real fucking deal as far as demos go. It just doesn't sound all that great, but having seen the band play this stuff live, I know there's more going on here. This is old-school death metal (well, thirty years ago it was just "death metal") with a touch of grindcore, to the point and without any pretension. Very basic death metal going on here, nothing fancy at all with a very muddy sound. This is brutal, barebones death metal and, based on what I heard live, this demo would benefit from a rerecording with better means as in its current state it just doesn't do the songs justice. You'll likely have heard similar stuff from a myriad other bands, but Exotoxic aren't new kids on the block, they were there back in the day. |
