Leather Leone, who first rose to metal prominence as the singer for David T. Chastain's eponymous band back in the '80s and cut her teeth on classic albums like Ruler of the Wasteland and The 7th of Never, has now released her third solo album. If you were concerned she might use this outlet to explore different styles, rest assured Leather is all about kicking ass and taking names with We Are the Chosen. She belts out vocals with her signature power and charisma and sounds as good as she ever has. Songs like "We Take Back Control" and "Dark Days" are solid balls of molten metal riffs rolling down a mountainside at top speed all the while being molded into shining steel by Leather's singing. On songs like "Shadows," the tempos are slower with a filthy guitar tone delivering a dark and menacing, almost southern boogie riff which allows Leather to grab you by the scruff of your neck with her delivery. We are the Chosen rocks hard from start to finish, like the best stuff from Herman Frank, U.D.O. and solo artists/bands of that ilk and, while not a million miles away from Chastain, has a warmer, more intimate feel. If you love well-done traditional metal that pulls no punches and eschews being fancy in favor of a pile of killer licks, Leather's newest needs to be in your collection. |
