Stare Into the Face of Death is a four-song EP from Connecticut's Mourn the Light, a band whose previous effort, the album Suffer, Then We're Gone, I liked a lot. This new EP contains music that continues to explore the uptempo heavy/doom metal this band has chosen as their style. Songs like "The Hunt" and "Heavy Metal Destiny" are based around heavy riffs and a beefy bottom end, but Mourn the Light adds more keyboard work, which creates an expanded atmosphere. The vocals are once again solid, and it sounds like the singer might have been listening to Jake Rogers as his lines are not too far off from the Visigoth singer's. The next cut, "It All Comes Down," is slower and perhaps a bit more modern, with lots of reverb and a smoky piano riff underpinning a soulful vocal performance that reminds me of Dirt-era Alice in Chains. "Face of Death" is the closer and most adventurous songwriting effort, beginning with a brisk riff and catchy chorus, then shifting to a harsh vocal with creepy keyboards in the middle section, before wrapping up with more traditional metal guitar work. On the one hand, I would have liked a perhaps more consistent effort from Mourn the Light but on the other, I compliment them for trying out some different things and hey, that's what EPs are for, right? If you enjoyed their last album or are in the mood for some heavy/doom metal with epic flourishes like Visigoth or Argus, you should check out Stare Into the Face of Death.
